GUSDA Folk Festival Celebrates Guyana's 59th Independence & GUSDA’s 30th Anniversary in Grand Style

On Sunday, 25th May, the Guyana UK Social Development Association (GUSDA) hosted its much-anticipated Annual Folk Festival, marking both Guyana’s 59th Independence Anniversary and GUSDA’s own 30th milestone. The vibrant celebration, held at its temporary venue in Norbury, London, drew hundreds of Guyanese and friends from across London and beyond in a colourful display of culture, community, and pride.

Attendees were treated to a rich array of traditional Guyanese food, cultural performances, and lively entertainment. The festival buzzed with excitement as children and adults enjoyed creative workshop activities, while the main stage came alive with music, dance, and a spectacular masquerade band featuring the Stilts Man (Long Lady), Mother Sally, and the Mad Bull — all emblematic of Guyanese folklore.

Highlights of the event included the presentation of the GUSDA Diaspora Awards for Excellence, honouring outstanding contributions within the community. GUSDA was also deeply honoured by the presence of the Guyana High Commissioner, Dr Rajendra Sing and its Patron, the legendary Ram John "Porkpie" Holder.

Special thanks go to our generous sponsors, the Guyana Tourism Authority, as well as our dedicated volunteers, Disc Jockeys, GUSDA members, and all who attended and helped make the day a resounding success.

GUSDA’s next event is the Annual Sports and Fun Day on Saturday, 27th July — a day of family fun, games, and friendly competition. For tickets, please visit: https://guyanafamilysportsandfunday2025.eventbrite.co.uk/
